If you notice your dog obsessively licking, biting, or scratching a specific patch of skin until it becomes red, wet, and raw, they might be developing a "hot spot." Also known as acute moist dermatitis, hot spots can appear suddenly and spread rapidly if left unmanaged.
What Causes Hot Spots?
Hot spots are essentially self-inflicted skin irritations. They usually start with a minor irritant—like a flea bite, an underlying allergy, matted fur, or moisture trapped close to the skin after swimming. The intense itching causes the dog to chew the area, breaking the skin barrier and introducing dirt and debris, which creates the painful, irritated area.
Immediate At-Home Comfort
The key to managing a hot spot is to stop the itch-scratch cycle and keep the area clean and dry. Here is what you can do at home as soon as you spot one:
- Trim the Hair: Carefully trim the hair around the affected area to expose the hot spot to the air. Moisture trapped by fur makes it worse.
- Clean and Soothe: Gently clean the area without causing further pain. Avoid harsh chemicals or rubbing alcohol.
- Stop Licking: You may need to use an Elizabethan collar (the "cone of shame") temporarily to physically stop your dog from chewing the spot.
💡 Gentle Cleansing Tool:
Hot spots are extremely painful to the touch. For step 2, we highly recommend using our HOCl Pet Skin Care Spray.
- Sting-Free Cleansing: Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) provides a powerful yet incredibly gentle cleanse that will not sting raw skin like traditional harsh products do.
- Touchless Application: The spray format means you don't have to rub or touch the painful area, minimizing your pet's distress.
Important Note
If the hot spot is large, spreading rapidly, bleeding heavily, or if your dog is in severe pain, a veterinary visit is essential. Your vet may need to prescribe oral antibiotics or topical steroids to manage the underlying condition and severe inflammation.
