How Often Should You Bathe Your Pet?

Updated

One of the most common questions pet parents ask is, "How often should I give my pet a bath?" The answer depends heavily on your pet's breed, lifestyle, and coat type, but the general rule is: less is often more.

The Risk of Over-Bathing

Your pet's skin naturally produces oils that protect the skin barrier and keep the coat shiny and water-resistant. Bathing them too frequently with traditional shampoos can strip these essential oils, leading to dry, itchy skin, a dull coat, and sometimes an overproduction of oil as the skin tries to compensate.

General Guidelines

  • Indoor Cats: Rarely need baths. They are meticulous groomers. Unless they get into something sticky or toxic, or are hairless (like a Sphynx), brushing and occasional wiping are sufficient.
  • Short-Haired Dogs: Usually need a full bath every 2 to 3 months.
  • Long-Haired or Double-Coated Dogs: May need a bath every 4 to 6 weeks to avoid matting and manage undercoat debris.

💡 For In-Between Maintenance:

To stretch out the time between full water baths, rely on routine brushing and wipe-downs. Our Grooming Glove Wipes are perfect for keeping the coat fresh, removing surface dirt, and distributing natural oils evenly across the fur without the need for a tub.
