Is Human Toothpaste Safe for Dogs?

Updated

When you run out of pet toothpaste, it might be tempting to just use a dab of your own minty toothpaste on your dog's toothbrush. However, doing so can be incredibly dangerous and should be strictly avoided.

The Dangers of Human Toothpaste

Human toothpaste is designed with the assumption that we will spit it out and rinse our mouths. Pets, on the other hand, swallow whatever is put in their mouths. Human toothpaste contains several ingredients that are toxic to pets:

  • Xylitol: Many human toothpastes use this artificial sweetener. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and can cause a rapid, life-threatening drop in blood sugar and liver failure.
  • Fluoride: While great for human enamel, fluoride is toxic to dogs if ingested in large amounts.
  • Foaming Agents: Ingredients like Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) can cause severe upset stomach and vomiting if swallowed by a pet.

💡 Safe Alternative:

Always use a product specifically formulated for pets. Our Oral Care Gel is 100% lick-safe, free from Xylitol, fluoride, and foaming agents, making it completely safe for your pet to swallow during their daily cleaning routine.
