Just like humans, many dogs and cats wake up with a bit of "sleep" or crust in the corners of their eyes. These are commonly referred to as eye boogers. While usually harmless, knowing the difference between normal morning crusties and abnormal discharge is key to your pet's eye health.
What Is Normal?
Normal eye discharge is typically small in amount, crusty or slightly gooey, and clear, white, or slightly brownish. It usually accumulates after your pet wakes up or after they have been outdoors in dusty or windy conditions. It's simply the eye's natural way of flushing out minor irritants and old tears.
💡 Routine Cleanup Tip:
Never try to pull dry, hardened crusties off with your bare fingers, as this can pull the hair and hurt the delicate skin around the eye. Instead, use a pre-moistened Eye Wipe.
- Soften First: Hold the wipe gently over the crust for a few seconds to soften the hardened debris.
- Wipe Away: Gently wipe downwards and away from the eye corner. The textured surface of the wipe will easily lift the booger away without causing pain.
When to Call the Vet
If you notice any of the following signs, the discharge is no longer a simple hygiene issue and requires professional veterinary attention:
- Yellow or Green Discharge: Often indicates a bacterial infection.
- Excessive Tearing: If the eye is constantly watering more than usual.
- Redness or Swelling: In the white part of the eye or the surrounding tissue.
- Squinting or Pawing: If your pet is holding the eye shut or constantly rubbing it.
